GlitterNewt Gingrich, the Republican candidate for the US presidency, was showered with glitter by a gay rights campaigner during a visit to Minnesota.

Gingrich and his wife Callista were taking part in a book signing in Minneapolis when a man poured a box of sparkly confetti over their heads.

Nick Espinosa, a notorious political prankster, marched up to the candidate and said: “Feel the rainbow, Newt. Stop the hate. Stop anti-gay politics. It’s dividing our country and it’s not fixing our economy.”

Espinosa, 24, said the proposal to ban gay marriage in Minnesota was what provoked him to take action.

He explained, “I don’t think a free will adulterer like Newt has any ground to stand up while telling others who they can and can’t love.”

Gingrich’s response was to smile pointedly and murmur, “Nice to live in a free country.”

The 67 year old, who announced his presidential bid earlier this month, has faced a conservative backlash over his two divorces and infidelities.
