oday in the African country of Cameroon a group calling themselves the Rassemblement de la Jeunesse Camerounaise association (Cameroonian Youth Rally, or RJC) have declared it to be “Gay-Hate” day. In a twist to the normal gay pride parade seen in many countries around the world this annual hate day will be a ‘celebration’ against homosexuality, which is considered illegal in Cameroon.
Supporters of the gay hate day say they have organised the event to protect ‘traditional values’, but Alice N’Kom from the LGBT advocacy group AllOut have said in a statement “We want to tell them that hate and homophobia are not African values.”
She goes on to say: “We are bringing together people from across the continent to tell our country that pro-equality voices in Africa are strong.”
Yves Yomb, who works for another Cameroonian gay rights group Alternatives-Cameroun, added: “This anti-gay movement is misinforming Cameroonians. A poster announcing the ‘Gay Hate Day’ claims that hemorrhoids, incontinence and various infections are consequences of homosexuality.”
