spermGay couples and women over 40 will be entitled to free IVF treatment on the NHS for the first time under Government draft guidelines published today.

Same-sex couples will be given the same rights as heterosexual couples under guidance issued by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Sarah Garrett, managing director of gay publishing company Square Peg Media and founder of the Alternative Parenting Show, told Sky News: “Just because you happen to be in love with the same sex doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be allowed to have children. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for same-sex couples who wouldn’t have been able to have children before.”

Speaking to OUTnews, Garrett said “The guidelines have come under immense opposition from the church, however religious groups need to realise that the family unit is made up of all different combinations of guardians, including single parents, step parents and same-sex couples.”

The Alternative Parenting Show takes place on 20th September.
