maupinArmistead Maupin, author of the Tales of the City novels and a prominent gay rights activist, was told by a bartender that the bar’s gents toilets were for ‘real men’.

Maupin, 66, was in a bar in Alice Springs last Thursday with his partner, Christopher Turner, when the bartender refused to allow them entry to the gents toilets.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Maupin said: “Neither one of us could quite believe he’d said it. And he actually repeated it. He said ‘see the sign on the door. It says, gents. It’s for real men’.”
