The first same-sex marriages are taking place in Scotland. The first couples will begin marrying at 00:01 on Hogmanay.
Scottish Parliament approved same-sex marriage with 105 votes to 18 in February. More than two-thirds of people in Scotland agreed that gay couples should have the right to marry, according to the figures from the Social Attitudes Survey.
According to the BBC, the Scottish government said the move was the right thing to do, but Scotland’s two main churches – the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland – are opposed.
The law means that the whole of Great Britain – Scotland, England and Wales support same-sex marriage. However, Northern Ireland and and the crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are yet to allow gay marriage.
