MP Brigitte Bareges has caused an outcry after comparing same-sex marriages to ‘unions with animals’.
Bareges, of President Sarkozy’s Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (UMD) party, made the comments during a debate at the French national assembly.
Politician Franck Riester, a left-wing member of the UMP, demanded an apology from Bareges.
Rather than offering an apology, Bareges merely said: “I meant it as a joke. I am personally in favour of all types of sexual relations between consenting adults.”
