utahIn the US state of Utah, a bill has been proposed which gay rights groups fear may define marriage as existing only between a man and a woman.

The bill stipulates that state-funded programs and laws should always try to reinforce traditional family values. There are fears that this may prevent some families from receiving government services.

LaVar Christensen, a Utah Republican Representative, insists that his proposed bill would not change current policies. He told The Associated Press that he intends only to strengthen the values of Utah residents and that, for example, assistance programs for single mothers would remain intact.

However, Brandie Balken, director of LGBT rights group Equality Utah, expressed her concern that the bill narrows the definition of family and that this could be interpreted differently by individual agencies. She said that it could be used as an argument against single people adopting.
