Encouraging workplace diversity isn’t so much a radical idea as it is an everyday reality for Canadian employers seeking to recruit and retain the best talent.

That’s the key lesson from the winners of this year’s Canada’s Best Diversity Employers competition, announced on Thursday morning by Mediacorp Canada Inc.

“Employers that ensure their workforces reflect the community have an advantage,” says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which manages the competition. “These organizations benefit from a wider range of perspectives, which inevitably brings new and innovative ideas.”

Additionally, Leung notes, this year’s winners are eager to address inclusiveness subjects beyond the competition, including mental health, recent immigrants and veterans. “Increasingly, we see a desire by employers to have open and frank conversations about how they can enable employees to bring their ‘whole selves’ to work and tap into their full potential.”

Now in its 10th year, the Canada’s Best Diversity Employers competition recognizes the nation’s leaders in creating inclusive workplaces for employees from five diverse groups: women; visible minorities; persons with disabilities; Aboriginal peoples; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

The annual competition is open to any employer with its head office or principal place of business in Canada. Employers of any size may apply, whether private or public sector. The winners of this year’s competition will be recognized at a luncheon in downtown Toronto.
