PeterTatchellThe Equal Love campaign, which campaigns against the UK’s ban on gay marriage and straight civil partnerships, will today be putting its case to the European Court of Human rights. The campaign is led by prominent gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.

The case, which will be filed this week, is to use the rejection letters sent to four gay and four straight couples when they tried to register for ceremonies to which they currently aren’t entitled by UK law.

The couples’ legal advisor, human rights lawyer Professor Robert Wintemute said, “Banning same-sex marriage and different-sex civil partnerships violates articles 8, 12 and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights”.

Professor Wintemute expressed his confidence that the couples would win the case and that same-sex marriage would soon become legal, as “the UK government will eventually accept that it cannot defend the current discriminatory system”.

Gay rights campaigner, Peter Tatchell, compared the ban on gay marriage to a ban on black or Jewish people getting married. He called it a “form of sexual apartheid” and said, “In a democratic society, we should all be equal before the law”.
