RuPaul’s Drag Race star and friend of OutNews Global, Peppermint is heading for Broadway!

She has been announced for the cast of Head Over Heels, a new jukebox musical featuring the music of the Go-Go’s.

When the musical opens this summer, she’ll become the first performer who identifies as a trans woman to originate a principal role on Broadway.

Other RuPaul stars took a moment to congratulate Miss P on her announcement, with fellow Season 9 finalist Shea Couleé tweeting, “My sis @Peppermint247 keeps on slaying and making HERSTORY. I’m so proud of you!!!”

Produced by Gwyneth Paltrow, Head Over Heels had its world premiere in 2015 at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It will debut at San Francisco’s Curran Theater April 10 through May 6, followed by a run at the Hudson Theatre in New York starting June 23.

Peppermint is the second Drag Race contestant to appear on Broadway; the first, Dwayne Cooper (in drag, Milan), appeared in Motown and Hairspray. Many others have been a part of the New York theatre scene, including Jinkx Monsoon, who has celebrated numerous Off-Broadway runs with her act The Vaudevillians, and New York cabaret favourite Alexis Michelle.

With a book by Tony winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q) the musical includes Go-Go’s hits like “We Got the Beat,” “Head Over Heels” and “Our Lips Are Sealed,” as well as Belinda Carlisle singles like “Mad About You” and “Heaven is a Place on Earth.”

The story is an adaptation of Philip Sidney’s Arcadia, about a king who is told of a prophecy that, within a year, his elder daughter will be stolen away, his younger daughter will engage in an unsuitable love affair, his wife will commit adultery, and a foreigner will sit on his throne.

Peppermint is joined in the production by Jeremy Kushnier (Paramour), Rachel York (Disaster!), Alexandra Socha (Spring Awakening), Andrew Durand (Spring Awakening), Taylor Iman Jones (Groundhog Day), Bonnie Milligan (Kinky Boots), and Tom Alan Robbins (The Lion King).
