ussoldierssmallThe Pentagon will confirm later today that it approves the lifting of a ban on openly gay troops serving in the military.

The Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was annulled by President Obama last year, but could not take effect until the military leadership and president had proven that its repeal would not affect the efficacy or readiness of the military.

Soldiers will not be permitted to disclose their homosexuality until September, as 60 days must elapse between the Pentagon signing its official approval and the law taking effect.

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell has been responsible for a staggering 13,500 discharges since its implementation.
