Anti-gay group the Florida Family Association is raising money in order to buy a warning banner for the unofficial Disney Gay Day taking place at Walt Disney World on June 2, reports Gay Star News.
‘How would you feel if you entered the Magic Kingdom anticipating a normal day of fun with your family only to witness thousands of same-sex couples holding hands, hugging, kissing and wearing tee-shirts that promoted their lifestyle?’ the group asks on its website.
The Association has so far managed to raise half of the $8,400 needed to fly a banner around the Disney theme park in Orlando, FL. for 20 hours.
Gay Day began at the Magic Kingdom in 1991, and Disney has since come under fire from socially conservative groups who accuse Disney of not doing anything to stop the events. Disney does not endorse or acknowledge Gay Day and tells staff to treat it as any other day.
While the first year drew about 3,000 attendees wearing red shirts, it had grown to more than 20,000 participants as of 2010.
Florida Family Association flew a ‘warning’ banner last year and takes credit for causing ‘mainstream family attendance’ at the theme park to drop between 50-60 percent and therefore sparing ‘tens of thousands of children from the unexpected exposure to this coming out party.’
A week-long series of social gatherings has been planned at the area’s various theme parks and hotels from 29 May – 4 June.
