The man who murdered Ugandan LGBT rights campaigner David Kato in January this year is to face 30 years in prison.

Sydney Nsubuga pleaded guilty to the murder, and was handed the sentence last night by the Ugandan High Court in Mukono.

22-year-old Nsubuga was arrested on February 2 and said he had been staying with Mr Kato after he had bailed him out of prison.

David Kato’s death was condemned by international human rights organisations and United States President Barack Obama.

Nsubuga claimed that Mr Kato had agreed to pay him money for sex but did not hand over any money after the act. He also claimed his intention was not to kill Kato, and that it was in self-defence.

Police said: “He has confessed to the murder.  It wasn’t a robbery and it wasn’t because Kato was an activist.  It was a personal disagreement but I can’t say more than that.”

The announcement comes on the same day as Ugandan gay rights activist Frank Mugisha winning the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights award.
