Coronation Street bosses have posted an anti-homophobia memo on set.
They have taken action after ”several recent instances” of remarks made at the studio. The cast and crew have been reminded ITV takes these issues very seriously.
The memo, which was printed in the Sunday Mirror newspaper, read: ”We have just been made aware of several recent instances of homophobic remarks being made on the studio floor.
”We are sure that the vast majority of people working on ‘Coronation Street’ find such behaviour unacceptable but we’d like to make it absolutely clear that this is completely unacceptable to us, and to the company as a whole.
”ITV has a bullying and harassment policy which clearly states that such behaviour made lead to disciplinary proceedings.”
The notice was pinned to three locations on the soap’s Manchester studios, and a Coronation Street spokeswoman added the message – signed by senior producers Kieran Roberts, Stuart Blackburn and Robbie Sandison – was meant as a ”reminder to everybody”.
The spokeswoman said: ”ITV takes the feelings of all employees extremely seriously. It was felt that this message should be put up as a reminder to everybody.”
The warning comes despite the show promoting equality by continuing to feature homosexual relationships, with gay actor Charlie Condou being a big favourite with viewers.
