The Church of England faces a potential lawsuit after a senior gay cleric claims he was discriminated against due to his sexuality.

Those who seek a new outlook on the Church of England’s attitude towards sexuality have with open arms, welcomed news of the lawsuit challenging the acceptance of LGBT members in the church communitybishop .

Jeffrey John, the dean of St Albans faced objections from conservative evangelicals in 2003 when he was appointed Bishop of Reading, he then, in 2009 was prevented from becoming the bishop of Southwark after the archbishops of Canterbury and York stepped in to decline the promotion.

John’s frustration has now resulted in the hiring of Alison Downie, a discrimination law specialist hired to fight John’s case on the grounds of a violation of the equality law.

Rev Rod Thomas, director of Changing attitude, a company that works for full inclusion LGBT individuals in the Anglican community says that: “I think the church has behaved appallingly towards him in particular and is continuing to behave appallingly towards its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clergy and lay people in general.”
