Ofcom has launched an investigation into remarks about bisexuality made by Christopher Biggins on Celebrity Big Brother.
Chatting with fellow contestant Renee Graziano about homosexuality, the openly gay actor said: “The worst type though is, I’m afraid to say, the bisexuals… what it is is people not wanting to admit they are gay.”
Viewers took offence, but Biggins landed himself in further trouble.
He claimed HIV was spread by bisexuals who had sex with infected people abroad “and brought it back to their own families in America, and that’s how it became a worldwide disease”.
Biggins received a number of warnings while in the ‘CBB’ house and after he was eventually removed, it emerged he’d made comments made about the Holocaust, which never made it into the final broadcast.
Afterwards, Biggins said he was he was “very sorry and very sad”.
A number of complaints were made to the television watchdog after the actor implied that bisexuals were being dishonest about their sexual identity.
“We’re investigating whether a contestant’s comments about bisexual people were offensive and breached generally accepted standards,” a spokesman for Ofcom said.
