Shorter University in Georgia, US, is asking its staff to sign statements stating that they are not gay, failing to do so will result in losing their job.

President of the university, Don Dowless, said: “I think that anybody who adheres to a lifestyle that is outside of what the biblical mandate is and of what the board has passed, including the president, would not be allowed to continue here.”

The controversial decision, which is legal as the university is privately funded also requires their staff to reject premarital sex and adultery.

Employees signing the document agree to reject “all sexual activity not in agreement with the Bible”.

Mr Dowless added: “Anything outside that is not biblical, we do not accept. We have a right to hire only Christians.”

The document which is named ‘The personal lifestyle statement’ must be signed by all employees but not students.

Mr Dowless said the practice of making employees sign a lifestyle statement is  done at other Christian universities as well.
