China has passed a law against domestic violence, for married and unmarried couples who are co-habiting, but only if they are a man and a woman.

The country did not previously have any laws which covered family violence, which is a taboo subject in traditional Chinese culture.

The new law prohibits physical and psychological abuse, and makes it easier for spouses or partners to obtain restraining orders. While homosexuality is not illegal in China, LGBT people still have no legal protections.

Guo Linmao, a member of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Chinese parliament, said at a news conference that the law intended to tackle the most widespread problems.

“As for homosexuals in our country, we have not yet discovered this form of violence, so to give you a certain answer, it can be said that people who cohabit does not include homosexuals.”
