The Olympic gold medalist dedicates award to her haters.

The gold medal Olympian accepted the Award saying “I dedicate this award to my haters” and received a standing ovation at the event held by SPAR gsports – an NGO raising the profile of South African women in sport.

Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula Minister also presented her with a 2016 Minister’s Recognition of Excellence Award, along with other athletes.

Controversy surrounding Caster Semenya winning the women’s 800m at the Rio Olympics doesn’t look like subsiding any time soon.

Semenya has been labelled as an ‘intersex athlete’ by some after results from a gender test revealed she has no womb or ovaries.

Semenya’s  participation at the Rio Olympics followed weeks of what many described as bullying by the media and other athletes who believe that she should not have been allowed to compete because of her unusually high testosterone levels.

But Semenya was defiant about her victory when she flew home to a hero’s welcome in South Africa, saying she had ‘no time’ for her critics.

One of two openly LGBT South African athletes to compete at the Games, Semenya married fellow runner Violet Raseboya in a traditional ceremony in December last year.
