US director Brett Ratner, known for the Rush Hour film series has confirmed he will not be producing next year’s Academy Awards after using a gay slur at a screening for his latest film.

At a Q & A session Ratner responded to a question about how he works on a film set with: “Rehearsal is for fags.”

Mr Ratner responded on Monday releasing a statement of apology stating: “It was a dumb and outdated way of expressing myself.”

After angering several organisations including The Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD), Mr Ratner has actively stepped down from his production duties for the Oscars.

He said: “Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career.”

“But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents.”

“I am grateful to GLAAD for engaging me in a dialogue about what we can do together to increase awareness of the important and troubling issues this episode has raised and I look forward to working with them.”

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on February 26, 2012.
