juliagilliardAustralian Prime Minister Julia Gilliard is facing a revolt from within her own party after a number of Labour backbenchers have come out in support of a Green Party bill supporting gay marriage.

Ms Gilliard was subject to significant criticism when she announced last year that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

The Greens’ bill would give Federal Parliament the ability to override the laws of individual territories, and thus legalise gay marriage across the board.

The Australian Labour Party will debate the issue of gay marriage at its conference in December.
