arizonaThe US state of Arizona is pushing to cut health benefits for gay and lesbian domestic partners.

The state went to court in Phoenix yesterday, in an attempt to slash benefits for the partners of state employees.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, the state’s domestic partner benefits came about in 2008, when Governor Janet Napolitano used an administrative order to change the definition of “dependant” .

Since Napolitano left her gubernatorial post, the Republican-controlled state legislature has change the rules concerning benefits and have excluded gay and lesbian couples from coverage.

The state plans to cut the domestic partner benefits of 800 state employees, which cost between $4 and $5.5 million a year.
