archbishopsmall3The Catholic church has announced its intention to oppose in the ‘strongest terms’ proposals to allow gay marriages on religious premises.

The Archbishop of Canterbury issued a statement saying: “Marriage does not belong to the state any more than it belongs to the church. It is a fundamental human institution rooted in human nature itself. It is a lifelong commitment of a man and a woman to each other, publicly entered into, for their mutual wellbeing and for the procreation and upbringing of children.”

The Archbishop’s comments come despite the fact that faith groups will not be forced to allow ceremonies – the new laws work on an opt-in basis only.
