Apple has withdrawn an iPhone/iPad application which claims to ‘cure’ users of homosexuality.
The company was recently accused of promoting anti-gay discrimination when it approved the application, created by fundamentalist Christian group Exodus International, which offered, ‘freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus’.
The notoriously anti-gay ministry claim to be able to ‘cure’ homosexuality through reparative therapy, a practice condemned by mainstream medical professionals.
The decision to give the application the go-ahead spurred vehement protests from the LGBT community. A letter was written to Apple boss Steve Jobs, demanding that app be withdrawn.
A petition calling for the app’s withdrawal was also drawn up and signed by more than 146,000 people.
Exodus International’s iPhone ‘gay cure’ received a 4+ rating from Apple, who stated that its content is not offensive. The Guardian reported today that app has been withdrawn by Apple, who are unavailable for comment.
