fullerton_high_schoolA school has apologised for removing its student from a competition after he said he hoped gay marriage would be legal in ten years time.

Contestants were asked where they saw themselves in ten years time as part of Fullerton High School’s annual ‘Mr Fullerton’ pageant.

The student replied that he hoped to find the love of his life, marry him and hoped gay marriage would be legal.

He was then pulled from the competition by an assistant principal for veering awar from an agreed script, the Orange County Register reports.

Fullerton Joint Union High School District Superintendent George Giokaris said: “The district has concluded that the matter was not handled appropriately by the assistant principal.

“The district believes that the matter should have been handled privately with the student by the assistant principal.”

The assistant principal apologised privately to the student and publicly over the school’s tannoy system after receiving nearly 200 letters asking “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” in a protest against his gaffe.

Employment confidentiality rules prohibit the principal from revealing whether further disciplinary action will be taken against the assistant principal.
