The US Supreme Court has ruled that the homophobic Westboro Baptist Church should be permitted to picket the funerals of gay soldiers.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in opinion for the court: “What Westboro said, in the whole context of how and where it chose to say it, is entitled to ‘special protection’ under the First Amendment, and that protection cannot be overcome by a jury finding that the picketing was outrageous.”
The shocking ruling was passed with 8-1 in favour.
Westboro Baptist Church members have picketed many military gay funerals in order to express their belief that casualties of war are the result of divine retribution brought about by God’s hatred of homosexuality.
