Planting Peace, best known for their advocacy work, travelled to the continent with a rainbow flag in a symbolic gesture to announce full human rights for all LGBT people living in, or visiting Antarctica.

The organisation was founded in 2003 and focuses on humanitarian aid and environmental initiatives. Their headquarters, known as Equality House, is a rainbow coloured building that sits opposite the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.

President of Planting Peace, Aaron Jackson, has made a trek to the Antarctic which boasts just 4,000 residents in the summer dropping to 1,000 in the winter,

“I travelled to Antarctica to play a role in spreading visibility for the need for basic human rights for the LGBT community,” Jackson told Huffington Post. “It was an honour to carry the Pride flag throughout Antarctica, and Planting Peace will not stop fighting for LGBT rights until all sexual and gender minorities experience full, fundamental rights in every corner of the world.”

Writing on their website, Planting Peace said: ” Sexual orientation and sexual identity are a protected class of people according to the UN Human Rights Council.

“Any nation that denies these fundamental rights is in direct violation of the Declaration of Human Rights.

“Let this declaration serve as a catalyst to create the momentum needed to bring LGBT rights to every continent in the world.”

The advocacy group hopes that the declaration will act as a benchmark for other continents to follow.
