Alison Camps has been appointed as co-chair of Pride In London, a new role which organisers say is part of their on-going efforts to boost diversity.
Camps was previously director of marketing, and was responsible for several successful campaigns, including the award-winning #NoFilter this summer, and Pride Heroes, which celebrated the unsung champions of London’s LGBT community. She has also been instrumental in making Pride In London more accessible to marginalised groups including women, people of colour and the trans community. Camps joins Michael Salter-Church as co-chair.
On her new role, she said: “It’s an honour – as a member of the LGBT+ community and a woman – to take up this post for a movement which continues to have a profound importance in people’s lives. Equality is a cause close to my heart, and I am committed to ensuring that we do all we can to promote and further the interests of the full spectrum of diverse groups in London’s wonderful LGBT+ community.”
Camps told DIVA magazine: “My appointment as Co-chair for Pride in London is a clear statement of our intent to promote diversity in the most visible ways. We improved in lots of areas between 2015 and 2016 – for example in the representation of diverse groups on our stages – but we know we can do more, and are determined to do so.
“On a personal note, women’s equality is a subject very close to my heart and I look forward to making the UK’s biggest Pride event as inclusive as possible for lesbian, bi, queer and trans women. DIVA is a vital voice for us, and I look forward to working with you in 2017 and beyond.”
Salter-Church added: “It is important that Pride represents our entire community – and is seen to do so. This year we are making a significant change to the Board, a a specific move to improve diversity at the top of Pride.
“I am delighted that Alison has agreed to serve alongside me as the Co-Chair, she brings great experience to the role. Given we are all volunteers, this new role will also aide with the delivery of London’s third biggest annual one day event.”
