stpeterGay rights activists today in Russian criticised a bill passed by the city of St. Petersburg that prohibits “propaganda of homosexuality” to minors.

The United Russia party proposed the bill which was passed yesterday with a 27 to 1 vote, and one abstention.  The bill can see individuals fined up to 50,000 roubles (£1,000) for “public actions aimed at propaganda of pederasty, lesbianism, bisexuality, and transgenderism among minors.”

Activist, Nikolai Alexeyev of GayRussia.ru described the legislation as a “disgrace”.  He said the bill could be “the main legal reason to deny any public actions by the LGBT community.”

“It theoretically allows the ban of anything anywhere where kids could be present.”

GayRussia.ru hold rallies against discrimination against homosexuals in Russia.  Homosexuality was made legal in 1993 although discrimination is still widespread.
