The Leave campaign won the UK referendum, with the majority of voters in England and Wales voting for Brexit.
Prime Minister David Cameron had urged the country to vote Remain but was defeated by 52% to 48% despite London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backing staying in.
One of the spearheads of the Leave campaign Nigel Farage declared victory, telling supporters the vote would “go down in our history as our independence day”.
Ahead of the referendum on EU membership, Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU could damage LGBT rights in the UK.
The pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as the markets reacted to the results.
It has been feared leaving the European Union would harm hard fought for LGBT rights throughout Europe and beyond.
Labour’s LGBTI global envoy, Michael Cashman, reacted to the news.
Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Director of UK Black Pride, this morning said she was feeling “concerned” about the result and asked: “The trajectory of our future, what does that look like now UK vote to leave the EU?”
